Takeru Mini Rice Cooker / Warmer Super Lunch Box / Jar Travel Kitchen 0.8L (HL-901A)

Clever and compact, until you use it
I wanted to like this cute little cooker, with the snap-on lid and the miniscule footprint. I only have to cook one bowlful of rice at a time for lunch.

But mine, anyhow, is a mess. No matter what I cook, it boils over and spills down the sides of the bowl, scorches on the heating element, and drains out the bottom. I have to place this in a deep plate when I use it, to contain the mess, and it's a hassle to clean the bowl, lid, steamer, and exterior of the cooker every time.

The rice is cooked well, and the vegetables I steamed in the little chamber are nice and hot. I'm not using too much water. But it overflows with steam and liquid no matter what I cook; brown, white, basmati, jasmine, oats, barley... everything makes a mess.

Others may have better results, but I was disappointed.

It works OK, rice comes out nice
I bought this because there are very few small rice cookers available. I wanted something I could turn on and walk away from then let it do it's job. While this accomplishes the goal, I wish it did more. It does not have a timer, that would have been a perfect addition. It does not really provide much in the way of being portable, it's more like a table top rice cooker with a small food warmer on top. Its also not a steamer, it's more of a warmer.

The cooking dish is aluminum lined with non-stick coating. Anyone who is afraid of eating with aluminum touching their food should be OK, but those not liking to eat with food cooked on a non-stick surface, beware.

I knew it would take a few tries to get the basmati rice timing and amounts correct so I decided to go with one of the little measuring cups (comes with the cooker) and follow the directions. For this rice, the directions are not working, you need more water than it asks for. Possibly double the amount if you...

Perfect gift for a College Senior in a rented apartment
My niece is Chinese, and a very good cook. So this was a great gift for her to prepare her food early in the morning, plugging it in before lunch, and being the envy of all of her friends when she eats her custom made, hot meal, with all of the custom utensils provided. A perfect gift!
